CFS The Society was reformed in 1999 and has a flourishing membership. It is run by a small committee but the choice of films is made by members collectively. Its mission is to provide cultural cinema of a kind not normally available commercially outside London: films that are unlikely to be seen at local multiplexes, with an emphasis on world cinema rather than Hollywood blockbusters. It also seeks to promote the work of local film makers by screening their short films alongside mainstream features. It works closely with other arts based organisations in Colchester, such as Firstsite and Signals Media Arts, and local film societies, such as Chelmsford and Ipswich, to promote film culture. A new season begins every February. The Society meets every second Wednesday of the month, with the exception of the month of August, in the very comfortable and modern surroundings of the Headgate Theatre in Chapel Street Colchester. Facilities include: tiered seating, big screen, good blackout of light, upstairs bar, wheelchair access and inductive loop. Doors open at 7.30 and the screening starts at 8.00. A pleasant bar provides a welcoming waiting area. The Society is very well equipped and films are shown in DVD format using a digital projector on a large silver screen. The sound system and acoustics are excellent. Membership costs £25 a year and entitles the member to 11 films and a brochure describing the year's programme. The usual concessions are also available and there are special membership terms for couples. Members also gain free access to additional special screenings during the year.
